Blender MMD: How to Import and Use MMD Models in Blender

May 14, 2024

Are you a fan of MMD (MikuMikuDance) and want to incorporate MMD models into your Blender projects? In this tutorial, I will show you how to import and use MMD models in Blender.

Step 1: Prepare Your MMD Models

Before you start, make sure you have downloaded the MMD models you want to use in Blender. These models are typically in the PMX or PMD format. You can find a wide variety of MMD models on websites such as DeviantArt or NicoNico Douga.

Step 2: Install the MMD Tools Add-on

In order to import MMD models into Blender, you will need to install the MMD Tools add-on. To do this, go to Edit > Preferences > Add-ons in Blender, then search for 'MMD' in the search bar. Check the box next to MMD Tools to enable the add-on.

Step 3: Import the MMD Model

With the MMD Tools add-on enabled, you can now import MMD models into Blender. Go to File > Import > MMD (.pmx/.pmd) and select the MMD model file you want to import. Once imported, you can manipulate the model using Blender's tools and features.

Step 4: Adjust Materials and Textures

After importing the MMD model, you may need to adjust its materials and textures to achieve the desired look in Blender. This can involve tweaking the shader nodes, adjusting the UV mapping, or making other changes to the model's appearance.

Step 5: Rig and Pose the MMD Model

To animate the MMD model in Blender, you will need to rig it and create a skeleton for posing. This may involve adding armatures, weight painting, and setting up keyframes for animation. With the right techniques, you can bring your MMD model to life in Blender.

Step 6: Customize Your Scene

Once your MMD model is imported and rigged, you can customize your scene in Blender to create a visually compelling project. This can include adding lighting, creating backgrounds, and integrating other elements into your composition.

By following these steps, you can effectively import and use MMD models in Blender to enhance your creative projects. Whether you're a fan of MMD or simply want to expand your Blender workflow, integrating MMD models opens up new possibilities for your 3D artwork.
