How to Rotate an Object in SketchUp Free

Jul 06, 2024

SketchUp Free is a popular 3D modeling software that allows users to create and design various objects and structures. One essential skill for any SketchUp user is knowing how to rotate objects within the program. Here’s a simple guide on how to efficiently rotate an object in SketchUp Free.

Step 1: Open SketchUp Free and Import Your Object

First, open SketchUp Free and import the object you want to rotate. You can either create your own object within the program or import an existing file from your computer.

Step 2: Select the Object

Once your object is in the workspace, select it by clicking on it. You can use the Select tool to ensure that the object is highlighted or simply click on the object itself.

Step 3: Access the Rotate Tool

After selecting the object, navigate to the Tools menu at the top of the screen. From the Tools menu, find and click on the Rotate tool. The Rotate tool icon typically looks like a circular arrow.

Step 4: Choose the Rotation Anchor Point

Before you start rotating the object, you’ll need to choose a rotation anchor point. Click on the point within the object where you want it to rotate around. This anchor point will serve as the center of the rotation.

Step 5: Perform the Rotation

With the rotation anchor point set, you can now rotate the object. Click and drag your mouse to rotate the object around the anchor point. As you drag, you’ll see a preview of the rotation, allowing you to adjust the angle as needed.

Step 6: Finalize the Rotation

Once you’re satisfied with the rotation, release the mouse button to finalize the rotation of the object. You can also type in a specific angle for precise rotations in the Measurements box at the bottom right corner of the screen.

Step 7: Deselect the Object

After rotating the object, make sure to deselect it to avoid accidentally modifying its rotation. Simply click anywhere outside the object to deselect it.

By following these steps, you can efficiently rotate objects in SketchUp Free to enhance your 3D modeling skills and design projects. Practice rotating different objects to familiarize yourself with the process and improve your proficiency in using SketchUp Free.
