Jul 14, 2024

Are you new to Blender and struggling to navigate the viewport? In this tutorial, I'll show you how to rotate the viewport in Blender so you can easily adjust your view to work on different parts of your 3D model or animation.

Step 1: Open Blender and Load Your Project

First, open Blender and load the 3D model or animation project you want to work on. If you're new to Blender, you can find plenty of free models and projects online to practice with.

Step 2: Understand the 3D Viewport Navigation

Before we get into rotating the viewport, let's go over the basic navigation controls in the 3D viewport. You can rotate the view by holding down the middle mouse button and dragging, zoom in and out with the scroll wheel, and pan the view by holding down Shift and the middle mouse button while dragging.

Step 3: Rotate the Viewport Around an Object

To rotate the viewport around a specific object or part of your model, simply press and hold the period key (.) on your keyboard. This will activate the 'Rotate Around Selection' tool, allowing you to rotate the viewport around the selected object.

Step 4: Use the 3D Manipulator Gizmo

Alternatively, you can use the 3D manipulator gizmo to rotate the viewport. Simply select the 'Rotate' option in the gizmo menu, then click and drag the colored rings to rotate the view along specific axes.

Step 5: Customize the Rotation Controls

If you prefer to customize the rotation controls, you can do so in the Blender preferences. Navigate to the 'Input' section and customize the hotkeys or mouse controls for rotating the viewport to better suit your workflow.

Final Thoughts

Now that you know how to rotate the viewport in Blender, take some time to practice and get comfortable with navigating your 3D projects. Being able to easily adjust your view will help you work more efficiently and make the most out of Blender's powerful 3D modeling and animation features.
