How to Rotate an Object in SketchUp Free

Jul 30, 2024

If you're using SketchUp Free for your 3D modeling projects, knowing how to rotate objects is essential for creating dynamic and realistic designs. Follow these simple steps to rotate objects in SketchUp Free and bring your designs to life.

Step 1: Open Your SketchUp Free Project

Launch SketchUp Free and open the project in which you want to rotate an object. Navigate to the object you want to rotate within your project.

Step 2: Select the Rotate Tool

Once you have your object selected, locate and click on the 'Rotate' tool in the SketchUp Free toolbar. The Rotate tool is represented by a circular arrow icon and is used to rotate objects in your 3D design space.

Step 3: Choose the Rotation Axis

After selecting the Rotate tool, SketchUp Free will display colored rotation axes (red, green, and blue) around the object. Click on the axis along which you want to rotate the object. For example, if you want to rotate the object vertically, click on the blue axis.

Step 4: Set the Rotation Point

Click on the point on the object where you want the rotation to pivot around. This sets the center point for the rotation. You can click on a specific vertex, midpoint, or any other point on the object to define the rotation point.

Step 5: Rotate the Object

With the rotation axis and pivot point set, click and drag your mouse to start rotating the object. As you drag, you will see a preview of the object's rotation. Release the mouse button when you have achieved the desired rotation.

Step 6: Confirm the Rotation

Once you release the mouse button, SketchUp Free will confirm the rotation and apply it to the object. You can repeat the process to make additional rotations as needed.

Step 7: Save Your Work

After rotating the object to your satisfaction, don't forget to save your SketchUp Free project to preserve your changes. Click on the 'Save' button or use the keyboard shortcut to save your progress.

By following these steps, you can easily rotate objects in SketchUp Free to enhance your 3D modeling skills and create more dynamic designs. Practice rotating objects along different axes and experiment with different pivot points to gain a better understanding of object manipulation in SketchUp Free. With patience and practice, you'll be able to create stunning 3D designs with ease.
