How to Create an OBJ File in After Effects

Sep 29, 2024

Are you looking to add some 3D elements to your motion graphics or animations in After Effects? One way to do that is by creating an OBJ file from your 3D models. In this tutorial, we'll walk you through the steps to make an OBJ file in After Effects.

Step 1: Prepare Your 3D Model

Before you can create an OBJ file, you'll need a 3D model to work with. You can create your 3D model in a software like Blender, Cinema 4D, or Maya. Once you have your 3D model ready, export it as an OBJ file format.

Step 2: Import Your 3D Model into After Effects

Once you have your OBJ file ready, open After Effects and import your 3D model. You can do this by going to File > Import > File, and selecting your OBJ file.

Step 3: Set Up Your Composition

Create a new composition in After Effects and drag your OBJ file into the composition. You can now position and animate your 3D model within the composition as you would with any other layer in After Effects.

Step 4: Apply Materials and Textures

If your 3D model has materials and textures, you can apply them to your OBJ file in After Effects using the Element 3D plugin or other 3D plugins available. This will help bring your 3D model to life and make it look more realistic.

Step 5: Animation and Rendering

Now that your 3D model is in After Effects, you can animate it using keyframes or expressions to create dynamic movements. Once you're done animating, you can render out the final animation with your 3D model.

Step 6: Export as OBJ Sequence

If you want to export your 3D animation as an OBJ sequence for use in other 3D software, you can use the Element 3D plugin to export your animation as an OBJ sequence.

And that's it! You've successfully created an OBJ file in After Effects and brought your 3D model to life in your motion graphics and animations. With this newfound knowledge, you can now add stunning 3D elements to your After Effects projects and take your work to the next level.
