Create an OBJ File in After Effects

Sep 29, 2024

Hey everyone! Have you ever wanted to take your 3D models from After Effects and use them in other 3D software? You can do that by exporting your 3D models as OBJ files. Here's how you can do it:

Step 1: Create or import your 3D model in After Effects. You can use plugins like Element 3D or build your own 3D models using the built-in tools.

Step 2: Once your 3D model is ready, go to the Composition menu and select 'Save Frame As' and then 'Photoshop Layers'. This will save each layer of your composition as a separate file.

Step 3: Open Adobe Photoshop and import the saved layers. Then go to 3D > New 3D Extrusion from Selected Layer. This will convert your 2D layers into a 3D object.

Step 4: Adjust your 3D model using the 3D tools in Photoshop. Once you're satisfied with the look of your model, go to 3D > Export 3D Layer. Choose OBJ as the file format and click 'OK' to save your OBJ file.

Now you have successfully created an OBJ file from your 3D model in After Effects! You can use this OBJ file in other 3D software like Cinema 4D, Blender, or Maya to continue working on your 3D project.

Remember that exporting 3D models from After Effects to OBJ files works best for simple 3D shapes and text. If you have complex 3D scenes or animated characters, it's recommended to use dedicated 3D software for a more efficient workflow.

I hope this article helps you in creating and exporting your 3D models from After Effects. Have fun exploring the world of 3D modeling and animation! If you have any questions, feel free to leave a comment below. Happy creating!
