How to Import OBJ File in After Effects

Oct 08, 2024

Hey everyone, welcome back to another After Effects tutorial! Today, I'm going to show you how to import OBJ files into After Effects so you can bring 3D models into your compositions and take your motion graphics to the next level.

Step 1: Prepare Your OBJ File

First, make sure you have your OBJ file ready. You can create or download 3D models from various websites, such as TurboSquid or Sketchfab. Once you have your OBJ file, you're ready to move on to the next step.

Step 2: Install the Element 3D Plugin

In order to import OBJ files into After Effects, you'll need to use the Element 3D plugin from Video Copilot. If you don't already have it, you can purchase and download it from their website. Install the plugin following the provided instructions.

Step 3: Import Your OBJ File

Once the Element 3D plugin is installed, open After Effects and create a new composition. Then, go to the 'Effect' tab, navigate to Video Copilot > Element, and click on the 'Scene Setup' button. This will open the Element 3D interface.

In the Element 3D interface, click on the 'Import' button and select your OBJ file from the file explorer. After Effects will then import your 3D model and display it in the interface.

Step 4: Adjust Your 3D Model

You can now adjust the position, scale, rotation, and materials of your 3D model within the Element 3D interface. You can also apply textures and animations to bring your 3D model to life.

Step 5: Incorporate Your 3D Model into Your Composition

After you've made all the necessary adjustments to your 3D model, close the Element 3D interface and your 3D model will be imported into your After Effects composition. You can now animate and integrate it into your motion graphics as you would with any other layer in After Effects.

And there you have it! You've successfully imported an OBJ file into After Effects and incorporated a 3D model into your motion graphics. I hope you found this tutorial helpful and stay tuned for more After Effects tips and tricks.
