How to Export OBJ with Texture in Maya

Oct 11, 2024

Are you a 3D artist using Maya for your modeling work? If so, you may often find the need to export your models along with their textures for use in other programs or sharing with colleagues. In this article, we'll walk you through the steps to export an OBJ file with textures in Maya.

Step 1: Apply Textures to Your Model

Before you can export your model with textures, you need to ensure that the textures are properly applied to the model in Maya. Use the UV Editor to lay out and organize your UVs, and then apply the textures to the model using Maya's Hypershade editor. Make sure all file paths for the textures are set correctly.

Step 2: Export as OBJ

Once your model is properly textured, it's time to export it as an OBJ file. To do this, go to File > Export Selection. In the Export Selection window, choose OBJexport from the Files of Type dropdown. Before clicking Export, make sure to select 'Export Selection' so that only the selected model and its associated textures are exported. This will ensure that the OBJ file references the textures correctly.

Step 3: Set OBJ Export Options

After clicking Export, a new window will appear with OBJ export options. Here, you can specify various settings for the OBJ file, such as the scale, grouping, and whether to export texture coordinates. Ensure that the 'Export Texture Maps' option is checked to include the textures in the OBJ file. You can also choose to export materials and shading groups if needed.

Step 4: Export Texture Files

In addition to exporting the OBJ file, you also need to make sure that the texture files are included in the export. Maya will create a .mtl file alongside the OBJ file, which contains references to the texture files. Make sure to keep the texture files in the same directory as the OBJ file, or update the file paths in the .mtl file if you move the files to a different location.

Step 5: Test the Exported OBJ

Once the export process is complete, it's a good idea to test the exported OBJ file in another 3D program, such as Blender or Unity, to ensure that the textures are applied correctly. If everything looks good, you're all set to share your 3D model along with its textures!

By following these steps, you can successfully export an OBJ file with textures from Maya, allowing you to easily share your 3D models with others or use them in different software applications. Now that you know how to do this, you can streamline your workflow and collaborate more effectively with colleagues in the 3D modeling industry.
