How to Make an Object Separate from You in VRChat

Oct 18, 2024

If you're an avid VRChat player, you may have come across the need to make an object or item separate from your avatar at some point. Whether it's a cool accessory or a fun interactive prop, knowing how to detach an object from your avatar can enhance your VR experience and add an extra level of customization to your virtual identity. Here's how to make an object separate from you in VRChat:

Step 1: Open Unity and VRChat SDK

Before you can make any changes to your avatar, you'll need to have Unity and the VRChat Software Development Kit (SDK) installed on your computer. If you haven't done so already, make sure to download and set up both Unity and the VRChat SDK.

Step 2: Create a New GameObject

In Unity, select the avatar to which you want to attach the object. Then, create a new GameObject by right-clicking in the Hierarchy window and selecting 'Create Empty'. This will serve as the parent object for the item you want to detach.

Step 3: Position and Attach the Object

Once you have the new GameObject created, position it where you want the object to be attached to your avatar. Then, either import or create the 3D model of the object you want to add to your avatar. Drag the 3D model into the Hierarchy window and make it a child of the GameObject you created in the previous step.

Step 4: Set the Position and Rotation

With the object now attached as a child of the GameObject, you can adjust its position and rotation to make sure it's positioned correctly on your avatar. Use the Transform tools in Unity to make any necessary adjustments.

Step 5: Export and Upload to VRChat

Once you're satisfied with the position and attachment of the object, save your changes in Unity and upload the updated avatar to VRChat. Go to the VRChat SDK menu within Unity and select 'Show Control Panel' to upload your customized avatar.

Step 6: Test and Enjoy

After uploading your avatar with the detached object, log in to VRChat and select your avatar. You should now see the detached object or accessory separate from your avatar, ready for you to enjoy in the virtual world.

By following these steps, you can make objects separate from your avatar in VRChat and add a personal touch to your virtual identity. Whether it's a stylish accessory, a fun prop, or any other creative addition, detaching objects from your avatar can take your VRChat experience to the next level.
