How to Use 3D Views Without Numpad in Blender

Oct 19, 2024

Are you a Blender user without a numpad on your keyboard? Don't worry, you can still navigate 3D views in Blender with a few keyboard shortcuts and tips.

1. Enable Emulate Numpad: If your keyboard doesn't have a numpad, you can enable the 'Emulate Numpad' option in Blender. Go to Edit > Preferences > Input and check the 'Emulate Numpad' box. This will allow you to use the number keys at the top of your keyboard to emulate the numpad.

2. Use the Top Row: With 'Emulate Numpad' enabled, the number keys at the top of your keyboard will act as the numpad keys. For example, you can use '1' for front view, '3' for right view, '7' for top view, and so on.

3. Add Custom Shortcuts: You can also create custom keyboard shortcuts for 3D view navigation. Go to Edit > Preferences > Keymap and click on the 'Add' button to create a new shortcut. You can then assign a key or combination of keys to emulate numpad functions such as front, side, and top views.

4. Use the View Menu: If you prefer using the mouse for navigation, you can also access the 3D view options from the 'View' menu at the bottom of the 3D viewport. Here, you'll find options for switching between different views and perspectives, such as front, side, top, and camera views.

5. Utilize the Viewport Gizmo: Blender also has a viewport gizmo that provides an intuitive way to navigate 3D views. You can click and drag on the gizmo to rotate, pan, and zoom the view without the need for numpad keys.

By utilizing these keyboard shortcuts, settings, and tools, you can easily navigate 3D views in Blender without the need for a numpad. Whether you're using a laptop without a numpad or simply prefer alternative methods of navigation, these tips will help you streamline your 3D modeling workflow in Blender.
